“For years, Los Angeles has been ground zero in an intense debate about how to improve our nation’s education system. What’s less known is who is shaping that debate. Many of the biggest contributors to the so-called “school choice” movement — code words for privatizing our public education system — are billionaires who don’t live in Southern California, but have gained significant influence in local school politics.”
Twenty-eight concerned teachers and health and services professionals from throughout the Valley East Area dedicated their evening to call voters on behalf of UTLA-endorsed Steve Zimmer.
Over 1,056 calls to voters were made in at the Phone Bank In a Box (PBIB) session. This was one of four UTLA PBIB sessions that took place the evening of February 27.
UTLA is sad to announce the passing of Ms. Harriet Perl.
Ms. Perl was one of the founders of UTLA and worked as UTLA’s proofreader. She was a dedicated English teacher at Hamilton High School and a fiercely respected community leader. She passed peacefully at 8:45am this morning. She lived to be 92 years old, with a dazzling legacy. Tune in to NBC tomorrow and watch Ellen, as Ellen DeGeneres will briefly recognize Ms. Perl’s life and passing.
